The difference between lochia and menstruation

Published by Dailys 2024-03-06

Lochia is some of the uterine matter that women excrete after giving birth. After the fetus is delivered, the remaining uterine matter will be eliminated one after another. This is lochia. The time of lochia discharge is relatively short, usually only two or three weeks, mainly during the confinement period. Because lochia and menstruation have some similarities, women sometimes can't tell the difference. So what are the differences between lochia and menstruation?

First of all, lochia is a secretion that begins to be excreted on the first day after giving birth. It has a bloody smell, but it does not smell. The color is bright red and is very similar to ordinary menstruation, but the amount will be more than that of menstruation, and some lochia will also contain blood clots. . When the lochia is discharged to about the 6th day, the texture of the lochia will begin to change, the blood volume will decrease, and it will be mucus-like. White lochia is discharged about a week after giving birth, and the lochia lasts for about three weeks.

In addition, postpartum menstruation generally does not come so early. If it is a breastfeeding woman, it may take 6-8 months before the initial menstrual cramp. For women who are not breastfeeding, the menstrual cramp will come earlier, and it may be about 40 days. At this time, the menstrual volume will be relatively large, but the menstrual volume and duration are generally staggered from the lochia, and women are also very simple to distinguish, not very complicated.
